About
More than 10 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the newly-formed Republic of South Sudan have been left in need of food, water and emergency healthcare because of one of the worst droughts in 60 years. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled Somalia due to the drought and conflict, parts of the country are now afflicted by famine.
After reading and watching horrific news reports about situation in the horn of Africa, members of the North East of England’s music community decided that they must help.
NExEA: North East by East Africa is the result, a limited edition CD - plus a digital download - which features a whole host of new, rare and exclusive tracks from some of the region’s best and most prestigious bands.
The Futureheads, Field Music, Paul Smith (Maximo Park), Let’s Buy Happiness, plus US singer-songwriter Willy Mason, who has recently recorded a brand new song at Blank Studios in Newcastle’s Ouseburn Valley, have generously agreed to donate their tracks to the release. The CD will also feature a host of up-and-coming North East artists who are beginning to make waves nationally. These include The Lake Poets, Vinyl Jacket, Lanterns On The Lake, Young Liar plus many more. Visit The Bands page to find out the full list.
The project hopes that our vibrant local music scene can help to raise awareness along with a substantial sum of money for this most pressing of causes, and we have been overwhelmed by the willingness of local musicians to support the cause.
All the profits will be donated to the DEC East Africa Appeal.
